Description

This sharp telescopic view reveals galaxies scattered beyond the stars of the Milky Way, at the northern boundary of the high-flying constellation Pegasus. Prominent at the upper right is the NGC 7331 group which is a visual grouping of galaxies also known as the Deer Lick Group, NGC 7331 is the brightest spiral galaxy in the same field as the collection, It lies at a distance of about 40 Mly from us, The group contains four other members, affectionately referred to as the "fleas”:  These galaxies lie at different distances ranging from 294 to 365 Mly from us. Although adjacent in the sky, this collection is not a galaxy group, as NGC 7331 itself is not gravitationally associated with the far more distant “fleas”.

The disturbed-looking group of galaxies at the lower left is well-known as Stephan's Quintet. The odd-looking NGC 7320 is a relatively nearby (only ~40 Mly) spiral galaxy along the line of sight towards the much more distant group of galaxies that are about 200 Mly away.  On the sky, the quintet and NGC 7331 group are separated by about half a degree.
